Life As A Content Services Apprentice

11 August 2020

My name is Lorna and I have been working for ITV for 2 years. I began my journey at ITV via the Apprenticeship programme. I always wanted to work for ITV so the apprenticeship route was a fantastic opportunity for me to get my foot in the door.

Within ITV Content Delivery my role consists of transcoding and editing ITV’s programmes to meet global broadcasters requirements across the globe. So, if you’re planning on travelling to Australia – don’t worry, I can ensure you won’t miss that episode of Corrie you’ve been waiting the whole week for!

Before applying at ITV, I worked for a large technology company working in the marketing department. Managing their social media accounts, websites and having an input into the design process of their technology apps.

I’m a very practical hands on learner, so working alongside studying was more appealing to me, so when the opportunity arose for an apprenticeship with ITV I knew it was something I had to go for.

Applying in the first instance was very daunting. After doing some research, I discovered that entry onto the apprenticeship programme at ITV is highly competitive. However, as I went through the process at each stage, from the assessment day to the final interview the wonderful people that are now my colleagues put me at ease.

When I first saw the ITV Content Delivery apprenticeship criteria I knew that the technical nature of working within this team really appealed to me. I also thought that working for a company like ITV reflects my own values being as inclusive as they are.

The apprenticeship as a whole offered me major opportunities such as visiting other apprentices in London for training days, going on tours round TV sets such as Emmerdale and Coronation Street and learning about other departments within ITV and how their role is crucial to getting programmes to broadcast.

Working at ITV Content Delivery is demanding and challenging every day, but the constant positivity of the team is a great support to enable me to enjoy my role to the fullest. The minute I walked through the doors on my first day I was welcomed into the family with open arms and a whole load of technical jargon! Every single member of the team is knowledgeable, supportive, unique in their own way and we all learn from each other

If you’re thinking of applying for an apprenticeship with ITV, then don’t just think it, do it. It’s not as daunting as you think and ITV are incredibly supportive of those coming into the TV industry at ground level. Having just that little bit of courage to apply for the programme was the best decision I ever made.
